+ ONLINE ENVIRONMENT : TRUST STORY +

TRUST is a story, a game, a Virtual Reality world and an invitation to play and fly in a world of our own making, where teamwork is rewarded more richly than competition. The idea began to come to life in late 2002 when Goodman met Christoph Bregler, and they formed a team of artists and technologists from the larger SPIRITLEVEL project consortiumk, to focus on building the world of TRUST. But TRUST is a story that has been written and unwritten and rewritten for thousands of years by kids writing on each other's backs with fingers at bedtime, by siblings telling stories to keep themselves alive (from Sheherazade to Dunuziade in 1001 Arabian Nights . . . from the authors to their own little sisters) . . . TRUST is a game to be made anew each time it is played. There are no rules. There are no instructions. Each child makes it her or his own. The characters can be customized and made to represent the movement style of the child (rounder legs at the bottom can function like a wheelchair, for instance). TRUST is a story to be played. It takes the structure of a game: step into the VR world and choose one of two characters: TRUST (who is effectively adventurous but then sometimes pulls back, having difficulty trusting her/his own body in the world, therefore tending to react physically and emotionally in distrustful ways towards others too) and HOPE (who is always hopeful, bouncing, reaching for the sky, but has trouble trusting that s/he or others can keep the foundations stable enough to build upon for long).

TRUST and HOPE have distinct movement patterns, sounds and character traits. If they move without paying attention to one another, they tend to get tangled up. If they move in tandem, with attention and care and creativity, they move the world forward and enrich it with sounds, images and other characters as well. TRUST is a coopetition game for children who want to make a beautiful world, on screen and all around them. The more the participants co-operate, the richer the world becomes, and the higher they rise in the levels of the game. One character cannot 'win' without the other. Holding hands is the key to success. The story making distracts from pain and aids healing. The two main characters (HOPE and TRUST) can be customised by children: shaped into new forms with variable wheels and wings. As these characters move through the world, they create the world around them. When HOPE moves higher s/he enriches the world, when TRUST moves forward and back, s/he rotates the world. When the characters are mindful of one another, and avoid tangling each other up and crashing one another into objects and one another, they learn that in touching hands or wings, they can lead one another to higher levels of the game, with deeper interactions with the world and other creatures within it. The TRUST game can be played by children with varying degrees of physical mobility. Biosensors including breath controllers and movement sensors can help children without the ability speak or to manipulate standard controls to take an active part in drawing the world. We HOPE that TRUST will empower a new generation of kids, and will enable their families to play along and to take part in their imaginative games as well.
