The TRUST characters have been conceived as nonhuman, non-gender-specific creatures with personality, and with customisable 'parts' or 'limbs'. Each is controllable by input devices most comfortable to the users based on their physical abilities. One of our objectives is to provide each user's input system with a simple calibration method based in software so that the user has more of a typical plug and play experience. This will including the following: joysticks, simple keyboard movements, pressure switches and/or through breath sensors and other biosensor inputs. None of the main characters is therefore limited by the standard problems of robotics-led animations ('blocky movements' and the need to anthropomorphize the creatures before identifying with them) nor by the common inadequacies of most motion-capture based animations (where the lines can seem too hard, the images too clear to allow for that granularity of expression that captures the essence of 'liveness').
